On Wednesday morning we found an egg that had been laid in our classroom. The egg was surrounded by hay and we spotted footprints into the corridor and outside.
This inspired us to read our story called ‘The Egg’. We found out that George made his egg hatch by reading stories to it.
We decided that we would write our own stories and read them to the egg to help it hatch.

We are hoping that it will hatch today or tomorrow so we can find out what is inside.
We think it could be a dragon or a dinosaur.

The Egg

Today in English we have started looking at our new book, The Egg by M P Robertson.

We haven’t read the book yet but we have gathered lots of ideas by looking carefully at the front cover to see what the book might be about.

We shared our ideas about what might be inside the egg, how it got there and what else the front over tells us. We made a mind map of these before orally composing some sentences.

Take a listen to some of our ideas.

We have been reading the story ‘Tell me a dragon’ written by Jackie Morris. This has inspired us to write about our own dragons.

We have created a word bank of adjectives to help us write our sentences.

Here are our sentences that we have written independently. We have used capital letters, finger spaces, adjectives and full stops. Oliver L and Oliver B even included similes in their writing!

Miss Wilson is super impressed with everyone’s sentences.

This half term our topic is Knights and Dragons.  We will learn about the different parts of a castle and their features. We will also think about how a castle was defended and the different weapons used to attack! We will think about what life was like as a knight and what it was like to live in castle. Our topic will be brought to life with a trip to Conisborough Castle.

In maths we have begun learning about place value, reasoning and problem solving through the use of Numicon and other mathematical equipment including natural materials in the playground.

In English we are reading story ‘Tell me a dragon’ by Jackie Morris  and becoming familiar with this so that we are inspired to use adjectives and write sentences about our own dragon next week.

We have had a busy week in year 1, with lots of children setting wonderful examples and receiving leaves on our achievement tree.

Keep visiting our blog to see what we have been up to each week.
